Sambhaji Brigade is a political organization in Maharashtra, India. The organization bears the name of King Sambhaji, son of Maratha’s first king Shivaji and won exposure after being attacked and destroyed in protest by the Bhandarkar Institute for Oriental Studies in Pune against the book by US scientist James Laine on Shivaji’s title Shivaji: Hindu king in Islam India.Currently, Pravin Gaikwad is the director of this organization. Sambhaji Brigade requires reservation for Maratha Township and wants the inclusion of Marathas in the Casta Hind category (OBC). They also demand free education for Maratha children and registered marriages instead of religious ceremonies. The organization was criticized for its extremist anti-Brahmin views

A group of members of the brigade attacked and the Institute for Oriental Studies Bhandarkar (BORI) destroyed in January 2004. The attack was triggered by controversy over the controversial book by James Laine Shivaji: Hindu King in Islamic India (OUP, 2003); Institute scientists using Laine to gather information from his book on the founder of the Maratha kingdom, Shivaji, who had collaborated as blasphemy and claimed that the book presented “derogatory remarks about Shivaji and his mother.” The angry crowd of Sambhaji Brigade attacked and destroyed the BORI manuscripts and invaluable artifacts. Then, the Prime Minister of India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee condemned the violence, but confirmed the importance of disagreement and debate in a democracy. After the incident, 72 members of the group were arrested. In 2004, the director general of the police announced that they had the legal ban on the organization’s investigation, but as of 2015, the organization has never banned.

Following the government of Maharashtra (which included NCP), the name Dadoji Konddev’s books was removed from the school’s history, indicating that the Committee of Historians Government found no evidence that Dadoji Konddev was a teacher from Shivaji.
